Hate Crimes in Colorado

Reported Hate Crimes in Colorado Reach Record High in 2020

According to the FBI’s annual hate crime report, bias-motivated crimes reported by Colorado law enforcement officials hit a record high of 281 reported offenses in 2020. Only 224 hate-crime reports were filed in 2019, while the previous record was 261 reports in 1992.

Out of the 281 reported hate crimes, 182 cases involved race/ethnicity/ancestry, 48 cases involved sexual orientation, 34 cases involved religion, nine (9) cases were related to gender identity, five (5) cases were associated with disability, and three (3) cases had multiple reasons.

The Denver Police Department (DPD) received 75 hate crime reports in 2020. While there were 80 reported crimes in 2019, only 57 were reported in 2018.

However, the data is still considerably underreported because not all hate crimes are reported to the police.
